Trump Budget Proposal Prioritizes Wealthy at Expense of Lower-Income Americans

March 11, 2019, Washington, DC – The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today called upon Congress to reject the president’s 2020 budget request. NCJW CEO Nancy K. Kaufman released the following statement:

“By starting the budget process with draconian cuts to social programs, the administration hopes to push the basis for negotiations with Congress off a moral center and far to the political right. As a faith-based organization, we are morally outraged. While most of Trump’s proposals will not see the light of day as such, the end result will likely be yet another budget compromise that freezes money and programs in dire need of increased resources. According to the Coalition on Human Needs, nearly one-third of domestic human needs programs have been cut by 25 percent or more since 2010, as the stock market soars and unemployment falls. The Trump proposal also makes yet another assault on the Affordable Care Act.

“NCJW has joined with a long list of other faith-inspired groups to call for a budget that fosters hope, opportunity, and a place at the table for all, especially those experiencing hardship and oppression. A national budget is a moral document, and the US budget should reflect that fact.

“We know our nation’s progress depends on ensuring that every American has equal rights and opportunities, protected and advanced by a strong and just federal government. We come together to protect important services from harmful federal budget cuts and to utilize the federal capacity to spur economic growth and progress for the benefit of all.”

The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.
