PROGRAM NEWS

Roughly one-third of the 111 vacancies on the federal bench in mid-2011 are counted as judicial emergencies by the Administrative Office of the US Courts. Yet a minority in the Senate continues to thwart votes on nominees. The current pace of confirmations is too slow to make real progress in reducing the number of empty seats or to keep pace with retirements and resignations. To hear a further discussion of the current state of the judicial noms process, click here to listen to NCJW's distance learning call with guest speaker Marge Baker of People for the American Way.

On January 22, 1973 the Supreme Court affirmed women's constitutional right to abortion in its landmark Roe v. Wade ruling. This right continues to be under attack in courtrooms across the country, as anti-choice judges who hold lifetime seats on the federal bench hand down dangerous and restrictive rulings. Federal judges appointed to lifetime seats are positioned to render decisions that will define freedom for generations to come.

The BenchMark Campaign is NCJW's committment to ensuring that the judges confirmed to lifetime seats are committed to core constitutional values. As Jews, we understand what it means to have fundamental rights and liberties stripped away. Additionally, we know that reproductive rights are closely tied to religious freedom. Women have the right to be respected as moral decision-makers, able to make choices based on their own beliefs and traditions. For the courts to impose one religion's view on all of us defies the very meaning of religious liberty.
