FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 19, 2016, Washington, DC – The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), which has steadfastly supported Israel from before statehood, and which seeks to see Israel flourish as the Jewish homeland and live up to its greatest potential as a proud democratic nation, is appalled by the selection of David Friedman as U.S. Ambassador to Israel. NCJW CEO Nancy K. Kaufman released the following statement:
“Careful review of Mr. Friedman’s opinion pieces and past activities makes it clear that he stands for quite the opposite — an Israel that is not interested in peace with its neighbors and that does not believe in fair play, equal citizenship, or freedom of expression. Further, Friedman exacerbates a destructive trend within our own community, debasing those with whom he does not agree, even going so far as to liken members of J Street to ‘kapos’ in concentration camps.
“Friedman’s extremist views would lead us down a dangerous path to greater violence and self-destruction. Simply put, David Friedman is an irresponsible choice as US Ambassador to Israel. If confirmed, he could undermine Israel’s traditional bi-partisan support in the United States and alienate much of the American Jewish community.
“NCJW calls on the Senate to reject the nomination of David Friedman.”
