Trump Forced to Disband Voter Fraud Commission, But Hands Mission Over to Department of Homeland Security

January 4, 2018, Washington, DC — The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today welcomed President Trump’s action disbanding his so-called voter fraud commission, but expressed deep concern over his plan to refer its mission to the federal department that administers immigration law. He set up the commission after claiming he would have won the popular vote in the 2016 election, but for massive voter fraud committed by immigrants. NCJW CEO Nancy K. Kaufman released the following statement:

“When President Trump set up his commission, purportedly to investigate voter fraud, the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) said that the time, energy, and taxpayer dollars allotted for this commission should instead be directed at enforcing and strengthening voting rights laws and making it as easy as possible for all eligible individuals to cast a ballot.

“Now the commission, headed by Vice President Pence and voting rights foe Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, is mired in law suits and faces resistance in the states from all sides and officials of both parties. On December 24, a federal judge ordered the commission to share its documents equally on a nonpartisan basis with all its members in a suit filed by Democratic commission member Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap. That ruling could have led to further trouble for the administration — exposure of the commission’s true purpose. The group will die a timely death.

“In turning over its mission to the Department of Home Security, the president threatens to keep his attack on voting rights alive to fight another day. We fervently hope instead that this referral is just a fig leaf for the commission’s permanent demise and not another end run around the US constitution and the constitutions of many states. NCJW will continue to work with our allies to preserve and expand the right of every citizen to cast a ballot.”
