Senate and Trump Administration Fail to Protect Dreamers

February 16, 2018, Washington, DC – The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today expressed frustration at the Senate’s inability to find a compromise to protect Dreamers and immigrant families. NCJW CEO Nancy K. Kaufman released the following statement:

“Yesterday the Senate’s immigration “debate” ended with a failure to find compromise. Four amendments were proposed, three of which disastrously promised some protections for Dreamers in return for fulfilling all or part of President Trump’s deportation wish list. Those amendments, rightfully failed. But the fourth proposal, a bipartisan and commonsense solution, was also unsuccessful, and for that we are deeply troubled.

“The failure to protect Dreamers, which the vast majority of Americans support doing, is in part a reflection of the bad faith negotiation efforts of the administration. While the Senate negotiated, President Trump threatened to veto all but the most draconian measures, the Department of Homeland Security issued statements opposing bipartisan solutions, and close advisors like Stephen Miller continued to push policies that would harm families and communities. These actions made it all but impossible for the Senate to come to a reasonable agreement.

“In light of the failure to move forward this week, we must double down on our support of Dreamers and our calls to Congress to pass a clean Dream Act. Every day we fail to protect Dreamers is a day in which our nation does not live up to its principles of hope and welcome.”
