Trump Speech More of the Same — Division and Rancor

January 31, 2018, Washington, DC – The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today criticized the State of the Union speech delivered yesterday by President Trump as lacking in solutions for the nation’s problems and for exacerbating the differences he has widened. NCJW CEO Nancy K. Kaufman released the following statement:

“President Trump’s State of the Union speech delivered yesterday was long on American heroes and heroism and short on what Americans actually need and expect from their government. It hailed a tax cut for the richest, a whack at the Affordable Care Act, a paid leave plan that helps few, and new judges — including a Supreme Court justice —selected to undermine our constitutional rights. He extolled a retrograde immigration plan that more closely resembles the xenophobic 1920s than it does the needs of the 21st century.“In the wake of #metoo and time’s up, the president used the word women just once. While uplifting religious freedom, he made no mention of how that freedom is undermined for women by his policies further restricting access to contraceptive coverage and abortion.

“Once again President Trump used the spotlight to boast of accomplishments for which he cannot truthfully take credit and for national unity he works daily to erode. Our country is in desperate need of leadership that rises above ideological cant and partisan affiliation. And we are in desperate need of action on real issues, including long-term government funding for necessary social programs and immigrant youth brought the US as children. We at NCJW will continue to work for the policies and programs we believe our nation deserves and to defeat the attacks on our values and liberties mounted by this administration.”
