FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 11, 2020, Washington, D.C. – The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) strongly opposed the nomination of Andrew Brasher to the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit based on his record of hostility towards voting and other civil rights. Following the Senate’s vote to confirm Brasher, NCJW Chief Policy Officer Jody Rabhan issued the following statement:

“The National Council of Jewish Women’s (NCJW) vision for justice for women, families, and children is impossible unless every voter has the opportunity to engage with the political process in a meaningful way. Today’s vote to confirm Andrew Brasher to the US Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit stands in sharp contrast to that aim. The Senate voted to confirm Brasher to a lifetime judgeship, despite his aggressive efforts to oppose political participation by communities of color. Andrew Brasher is an extreme example of this administration’s disgraceful efforts to pack our courts with individuals seeking to limit participation in our democracy.

“Throughout his career, Brasher has advocated for racial gerrymandering and defended laws that disproportionately disenfranchise voters of color, including voter ID and proof of citizenship requirements, and a ban on former felons voting. He strongly supported gutting the Voting Rights Act and sought to exclude non-citizens from the census. We all depend on the federal courts to dispense equal justice under law. Unfortunately, Brasher’s record shows that any litigant in his courtroom can expect just the opposite.

“NCJW will continue to build an educated electorate around the federal courts and the judges who fill these lifetime appointments, and we won’t stop until the courts reflect the diversity of this country with judges committed to equality for all.”

The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.
