Resources to Combat Hate
August 11-12, 2018, marks the one-year anniversary of the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville at which anti-racist protester Heather Heyer was tragically killed. A year later, fascists rally in our nation’s capital while hate festers across the country. In this scary time, it can be difficult to know what to do or how to respond. NCJW’s list of action ideas and resources can help get you started. If you have any questions about these resources or how to combat hate, email Faith Williams.
Here are things you can do to resist hate wherever you live:
- Recognize hate speech as violent. Refuse to condone speech that calls for the genocide of people of color, Jewish people, LGBTQ communities, or others.
- Put the recent resurgence in white supremacy into context as part of our nation’s history.
- Learn what Jews have at stake in dismantling white supremacy.
- Get inspired by this call to action for the Jewish New Year from a white queer femme Jew in Charlottesville.
- Read reflections from those personally impacted by the events in Charlottesville last year, including a rabbi, a young activist of color, and Susan Bro, who lost her daughter Heather Heyer.
- Share your story on Communities Against Hate, a diverse coalition of organizations — including NCJW — dedicated to connecting survivors of hate incidents with resources.
- Support local organizing, and resist efforts to delegitimize grassroots collaboration and advocacy.
- Familiarize yourself with responses from local organizers in Charlottesville and Washington, DC.
- Get active in Get Out the Vote (GOTV) efforts in your community, and show up to the polls at every election, including the upcoming midterm election on November 6, 2018.
- Build a strong community focused on self-care, mutual respect, and meaningful relationships. We need each other now more than ever. Focus on the needs in your community, and work with those who are the most impacted to determine equitable solutions.
