Trump Transgender Military Ban Disgraces Democracy

March 13, 2019, Washington, DC – The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) denounced the decision by the Trump administration to effectively ban transgender people from serving in the armed forces. NCJW CEO Nancy K. Kaufman released the following statement:

“The Trump administration has devised a convoluted plan that makes it essentially impossible for transgender individuals to lay down their lives for the United States. It is an immoral, degrading, and self-defeating policy that will ultimately undermine the very national security that the president claims to be protecting.

“It is also a critical reminder that courts matter. Deference to the president over the protection of individual rights is at the heart of the legal rulings that have made the pursuit of this policy possible, even over the objection of military commanders. The National Council of Jewish Women will continue to campaign for the rights of trans individuals in every context where they are threatened. Our values demand no less.”
