The Family and Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act (HR 804 / S 248), introduced in February 2021 by Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), would ensure a permanent, national family and medical leave insurance program for the more than 100 million people in this country who need it. The FAMILY Act would provide up to twelve weeks of paid leave for any company employees to take care of their children, spouses, parents, and selves. This program would have a monumental impact on single parents and low wage earners — disproportionally women and people of color — who have been hardest hit by the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
