Tell the House: We need gun violence prevention legislation NOW

The Thompson-King background check bill (HR 4240), officially known as the Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act of 2017, offered by Reps. Mike Thompson (D-CA) and Peter King (R-NY) expands the existing background check system to cover all commercial firearm sales, including those at gun shows, over the internet, or in classified ads while providing reasonable exceptions for family and friend transfers. Background checks are the only systematic way to stop felons, domestic abusers, and other dangerous people from buying firearms. Current federal law only requires background checks for gun sales at licensed dealers. In the US, an estimated 1 in 5 gun transfers take place without going through a licensed dealer, including online and at gun shows.

Hi, my name is [X], and I am an NCJW activist living in [your city, state]. I’m calling to urge [Representative’s name] to support HR 4240, the bipartisan Thompson-King background check legislation. The bill would expand the existing background check system to cover all commercial firearm sales, including those at gun shows, over the internet, or in classified ads while providing reasonable exceptions for family and friend transfers. Recent polling shows 97% of the public and three-quarters of National Rifle Association (NRA) members are in favor of background checks. Keep our communities safe by passing this critical legislation.
