After accepting fewer than 30,000 refugees to enter the US in 2019, President Trump is planning to admit virtually no refugees in Fiscal Year 2020. As is dictated by federal law, the administration is meeting with Members of the Congress this month prior to setting the refugee admissions goal for next year. It is critical that Members of Congress pressure the administration to admit at least 95,000 refugees (the refugee resettlement program’s historic average) next year.
Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 three times to be connected to your senators and representative to tell your elected officials you support refugees. Here is a sample script:
My name is [name] and I’m a member of the National Council of Jewish Women and I live in [city/town]. My Jewish values teach me to welcome the stranger, and I urge you to do the same. Dismantling our nation’s refugee resettlement program not only betrays our faith values, but also our fundamental values as Americans. Refugees are a valuable part of our communities and our nation, and they deserve a chance to live in safety and display their determination and talent. Please do everything in your power to see that the administration commits to resettling 95,000 refugees in Fiscal Year 2020.
