The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) has long worked to improve the lives of women, children, and families. Specifically, we advocate for quality, comprehensive, affordable, and accessible child care, early childhood education (including universal pre-K and full-day kindergarten), and school-age programs. Given our historical groundbreaking research and work on child care issues, NCJW has a deep understanding of how important child care is to our nation. But the pandemic has laid bare the vulnerability of this system. Sign our petition to Members of Congress urging them to include $50 billion in the next COVID-19 relief package to save our child care system from collapse.
Hundreds of thousands of child care programs are at risk of permanent closure if they do not receive financial support. And the labor of watching our children — typically performed by women, many of whom are women of color — has long been undervalued. As the US grapples with how to re-open our economy, Congress must not disregard women-led industries.
We urge you to include at least $50 billion in relief for the child care sector in the next COVID-19 relief package to save hundreds of thousands of jobs and businesses, give families the support they need to return to work or school, and ensure that we will still have a child care system when the pandemic is over.
