Everyone deserves to have the peace of mind that good health brings. But immigrants face barriers to getting health care because of policy decisions that have left them behind.
Under current law, immigrants with lawful permanent resident (LPR, or green card) status must wait five years before they are eligible to enroll in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). As a result of these restrictions, immigrants are forced to navigate a patchwork of care, either relying on employer insurance or community health centers or paying directly out of pocket. Everyone needs access to affordable and comprehensive health care.
