President Trump has nominated William Barr to replace Jeff Sessions as US Attorney General. Barr’s record on civil rights enforcement is abysmal:
- Reproductive Rights: Barr has attacked women’s reproductive freedom, championing policies that would deny contraceptive access and abortion services to women. He has said outright that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided and should be overturned.
- Immigration: Barr has defended the Trump administration’s extreme anti-immigrant positions. He expressed support for the president’s discriminatory Muslim ban, calling it “squarely within both the president’s constitutional authority and his explicit statutory immigration powers.” In 1992, Barr advocated for the inhumane policy of prohibiting HIV-positive immigrants approved for political asylum from entering the United States.
- LGBTQ Rights: Barr holds disturbing views on LGBTQ rights. In a 1995 law review article, he criticized a DC law that prohibited Georgetown University from discriminating against LGBTQ student groups. He even went so far as to call the student groups’ conduct “immoral.” More recently, he has advocated against interpreting federal laws to include gender identity, a position at odds with the holdings of many federal courts.
- Criminal Justice: As Attorney General under George H.W. Bush, Barr pursued harsh criminal justice policies that furthered mass incarceration and the “war on drugs.” More recently, he has been a supporter of mandatory minimum sentences and latitude for abusive police officers.
The Attorney General, as our nation’s chief legal officer, is charged with protecting civil rights for all. Barr’s record indicates he will do the exact opposite. Use the script below to call your senators and insist that they reject Barr for Attorney General.

My name is [name] and I am a member of the National Council of Jewish Women calling from [city/town]. I call on you to stand up for civil rights by rejecting William Barr to be the next Attorney General of the United States. He has shown no respect for the rights of women, immigrants, people of color, LGBTQ individuals, and beyond. We need an Attorney General who will protect the rights of all, not criminalize our most vulnerable.
Our voices are strongest together. Help us make sure we reach all senators.
