Statehood for the District is not simply an issue of voting rights, but one of racial justice. DC historically has been a majority Black city, and today is the majority of people of color. Its more than 700,000 taxpaying residents deserve full and equal rights. In April 2021, the House of Representatives passed HR 51, which would grant statehood and voting representation in Congress to the District of Columbia. It’s time for the Senate to take action.
