NCJW Pledges to Push Ahead for Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

April 24, 2008, Washington, DC -- In response to the Senate vote (56-42), narrowly defeating a motion to move ahead on consideration of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act, National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) President Nancy Ratzan issued the following statement:

"NCJW was deeply disappointed in the Senate's failure to garner the 60 votes necessary to end the filibuster preventing consideration of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. However, the fight for this important legislation is far from over. A majority of senators understands that women and minority workers depend on this legislation to restore protection against wage discrimination -- protection undermined by a Supreme Court decision last year.

"NCJW reaffirms its passionate commitment to this legislation and will continue with vigilance to mobilize NCJW members and others to take action to educate their senators on this critical issue. The Ledbetter Fair Pay Act is about fundamental civil rights and essential economic opportunity, affecting more than half of the workforce in our nation.

"Each senator has the responsibility and opportunity to go on record with his or her personal commitment to end wage discrimination. NCJW urges every senator to stand against discrimination and enact this basic civil rights legislation."

The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.
