NCJW Expresses Extreme Disappointment at Immigration Stalemate

July 3, 2007, Washington, DC -- The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today expressed its extreme disappointment at the demise last week of any effort to achieve comprehensive immigration reform in this Congress. NCJW President Phyllis Snyder released the following statement:

"The failure of the Senate to raise the 60 votes necessary to overcome a filibuster and move forward on comprehensive immigration reform means that this issue is dead in this Congress. This is an extremely disappointing result, not because the pending bill was perfect -- far from it -- but because it was our best hope at moving ahead on this crucial issue this year. The failure of this Congress to pass reform leaves millions of immigrants under the threat of deportation, with families split apart and workers unprotected. NCJW remains committed to a humane resolution of the immigration dilemma and holds onto the hope that our political leaders will act in the near future to revive efforts to create a just national policy that will provide a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants living and working in our communities."

NCJW is a volunteer organization, inspired by Jewish values, that works to improve the quality of life for women, children, and families and to ensure individual rights and freedoms for all through its network of 90,000 members, supporters, and volunteers nationwide.
