NCJW Condemns Abuses in Abu Ghraib Prison -- Individuals and Officials Must be Held Fully Accountable

May 7, 2004, New York, NY -- National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) President Marsha Atkind expressed NCJW’s condemnation of the actions taken by US military personnel and others at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq:

“During the last week, we have watched in disgust as news and photos of flagrant mistreatment of Abu Ghraib prisoners have come to light. NCJW is appalled at the actions of US military personnel and others which violate universal standards of human decency and justice. Further, we are deeply disturbed at reports that these abuses surfaced months ago inside the military and that no corrective actions were taken.

"We agree with President Bush that this reflects badly on our nation and, as Americans, we share his remorse. NCJW urges that individuals and officials be held fully accountable for these deplorable actions.”

NCJW is a volunteer organization, inspired by Jewish values, that works to improve the quality of life for women, children, and families and to ensure individual rights and freedoms for all through its network of 90,000 members, supporters, and volunteers nationwide.
