NCJW Welcomes New Global Sexual and Reproductive Health Bill
April 23, 2010, Washington, DC -- The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) applauded yesterday's introduction in the US House of Representatives of the Global Sexual and Reproductive Health Act of 2010, which would strengthen and expand the US government's current program on international family planning and reproductive health. NCJW President Nancy Ratzan released the following statement:
"The Global Sexual and Reproductive Health Act would overhaul the existing outmoded and piecemeal approach that describes current US efforts in this arena. US-funded programs have done much good to date; they could do much more with an integrated, comprehensive and progressive approach. Addressing sexual and reproductive health care is key to eradicating poverty, achieving universal education, promoting gender equality, reducing child and maternal mortality, preventing HIV/AIDS, and protecting the global environment.
"Of necessity, the Global Sexual and Reproductive Health Act addresses the need to end unsafe abortion practices by providing support to ensure access to safe abortions where they are permitted under law. Unsafe abortion is a major cause of maternal mortality, accounting for 13 percent of maternal deaths worldwide – killing 70,000 women on a yearly basis and leaving 220,000 children a year without mothers.
"Moving forward with this legislation will require commitment, public education, and political mobilization. NCJW will gladly join in this effort."
The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.
