NCJW Applauds DC Adoption of Marriage Equality Law
December 16, 2009, Washington, DC -- The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today applauded the decision by the District of Columbia Council to enact a law allowing same sex marriage. NCJW President Nancy Ratzan released the following statement:
"Today is a great day for the nation's capital -- the scene of so many momentous protests against injustice and discrimination. The passage by the DC Council of a law permitting same sex marriage is a huge step forward for marriage equality, and the overwhelming majority on the Council is to be congratulated.
"As with many laws and policies of the District, however, the fight is not yet over. Congress has 30 days to overturn the Council's decision. We urge Congress to refrain from using this power -- a power which in and of itself is an affront to democracy and common notions of home rule.
"The District becomes the sixth state-level jurisdiction to legalize same sex marriage, and all will regard its adoption in our nation's capital as an historic step forward. NCJW will work to make sure this victory survives the congressional review period to become a symbol of hope for the marriage equality movement all over the country.”
The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.
