NCJW Co-Sponsors National Day of Action Against Stupak

December 2, 2009, Washington, DC -- The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today joined coalition partners and participants from around the country in a national lobby day for health care reform and reproductive health care coverage. NCJW President Nancy Ratzan, scheduled to speak at the event, released the following statement:

“NCJW is proud to be a co-sponsor and to play a lead role in the National Day of Action in Washington, DC, on December 2. On this day, in Washington and around the country, NCJW members join thousands of others to advocate against the dangerous Stupak amendment on health care reform.

“We cannot allow desperately needed health care reform to become the vehicle for depriving millions of women of the right to spend their own money to purchase comprehensive coverage that includes abortion services. The suggestion of so-called abortion insurance riders is an unacceptable, unworkable, and discriminatory ploy to disguise what the Stupak amendment actually means for women who face unintended or untenable pregnancies.

“Today women are in our nation's capital and in cities around the country to say, not on our watch. NCJW will continue to fight to ensure that the Stupak amendment is not included in any health care reform bill sent to the White House for the president's signature.”

The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.
